Verb forms | |||||||||||||||
|
Outcome: By the end of the lesson you will be able to use different “Verb
  forms” in context.
What is a Gerund? (For something general)
A gerund refers to the "-ing" from of a verb when it is used, as a verb, to form a noun phrase.
Examples:
1. I love learning.
2. Learning English is an easy process for some.
3. I prefer swimming.
4. Swimming is the best sport for having good health.
What is an Infinitive? (For a particular situation)
An Infinitive is a verb form that consists of the word "to" followed by a verb. However, an infinitive is not used as a verb! It can funtion as a noun, adjective or adverb.
Examples:
1. I want to sleep. Here "to sleep" is the Infinitive that is a noun and serves as the direct object of the transitive verb, want.
2. Is there anything to drink right now? Here to drink is the infinitive that is an adjective and modifies anything.
3. My father quit to find another job, "to find" is the infinitive that modifies quit, and it is an adverb (there is an object of an infinitive here: It's Job.)  | ||||||||||||||||
